What is a binder course?
A binder course is the middle asphalt layer in a pavement structure that sits between the base layer and the wearing course, bonding aggregate particles together and distributing vehicle loads downward.
The binder course occupies the middle position in a typical asphalt pavement build-up. It sits directly above the base course and below the wearing course (the surface you drive on), and its primary job is to transfer loads from the wearing course down to the layers beneath while holding everything together.
This layer typically contains coarser stone aggregate than the wearing course, mixed with a bituminous binder. The heavier aggregate provides structural support and load-bearing capacity, while the bitumen acts as the adhesive that binds particles into a cohesive layer.
