How we score paving contractors in Cheltenham

This page explains how we arrive at the composite score (0-100) attached to each of the 35 paving contractor businesses covered in this directory. The method is fixed and published here so you can check our working rather than take our word for it.

The five signals, heaviest first

Every business is scored on the same five measured signals, combined with the weights below.

  • Sentiment (28%): a synthesis of what recent reviews actually say, praise and complaints alike.
  • Rating (26%): the Google aggregate star rating.
  • Volume (20%): how many reviews a business has, log-scaled so ten reviews don't get treated like the weight of hundreds.
  • Recency (10%): how recently customers have actually left reviews.
  • Completeness (16%): whether a phone number, website, working hours and a full address are listed.

Why sentiment carries the most weight

Sentiment is weighted heaviest because a star average on its own can hide exactly the pattern you need to see. Two contractors can sit at the same 4.3 stars, but one of them has recent reviews repeating the same complaint (turned up late, edging cracked within a season, quote crept up mid-job) while the other has nothing but scattered, unrelated gripes. The average number can't tell you which is which. Reading what people actually wrote in recent reviews is the only way to catch that difference before you hire someone to rip up your drive.

Why the other signals matter

Rating still matters because it's the single most visible signal most people check first, and it reflects the broad shape of customer experience over time. Volume matters because a 5.0 score built on three reviews tells you almost nothing statistically, while a 4.6 built on 150 does; the log scale means extra reviews beyond a certain point add less and less to the score, rather than letting sheer count drown out quality. Recency matters because a paving contractor's crew, pricing and management can change: reviews from three years ago say less about who turns up at your house next month than reviews from the last few weeks. Completeness matters because a contractor who lists a working phone number, current hours, a real address and a website is easier to vet and easier to hold to a quote, which is itself a practical signal of how the business operates.

Where the score runs into limits

We're upfront about what this method can't do. A business with only a handful of recent reviews doesn't have enough data to support a confident score, so we label it clearly as low-confidence rather than pretend the number carries the same weight as one built on a larger, fresher review base. We also don't republish reviews wholesale: we synthesise the themes running through them, and we link out to the Google listing itself so you can read the original source and judge for yourself.

Scores are earned, not sold

Every score on this site comes from the rubric above and the public data behind it, and nothing else. Scores are never edited by hand. Where paid placement exists anywhere on this site, it is always labelled as such and it never changes a business's score. If any list on this site reflects editor-reviewed picks or ordering rather than the scoring formula alone, that is disclosed on the page itself, for example on our driveway paving best-of list.

Who's behind this guide

This directory is published by Meridian Guides, which has covered Cheltenham since 2025 as part of a wider set of independent city directories for everyday services. Meridian Guides doesn't sell rankings: sponsored placements are labelled clearly and payment never touches the score. Editorial oversight of the Cheltenham paving rankings sits with Janice, Editor, who maintains the listings and the scoring against this published method. You can read more about the publisher's other directories at meridianguides.my, reach the team directly at hello@meridianguides.my, or head back to the Cheltenham paving contractor directory home page.

How current is the data

Data behind these scores is refreshed monthly across all 35 businesses. Each listing carries its own "last verified" stamp so you can see exactly when it was last checked, rather than trusting a vague claim that the whole site is up to date.

FAQ

Can a paving contractor pay to improve their score?
No. Payment never changes a score. Where paid placement exists it is labelled clearly and kept separate from the scoring, which comes only from the five weighted signals described on this page.
Why does a business with a high star rating sometimes rank below one with a lower rating?
Because rating is only one of five signals. Sentiment, review volume, recency and how complete the listing is all factor in, so a slightly lower star average paired with strong recent sentiment and a complete listing can outscore a higher average that's thin on reviews or built on old feedback.
What does a low-confidence label mean?
It means the business has too few recent reviews to support a reliable score. We still show the score for reference, but we flag it so you know it carries less statistical weight than one built on a larger, fresher set of reviews.
How often is the information updated?
The full dataset behind the 35 listings is refreshed monthly. Each individual listing also shows a last verified date so you can check exactly when it was last confirmed.
