What is dense bitumen macadam (DBM)?
Dense bitumen macadam (DBM) is a bituminous-bound aggregate base layer, typically 100-150 mm thick, that forms the structural foundation beneath a tarmac wearing course in road construction and resurfacing projects.
DBM is a compacted mixture of coarse and fine aggregates bound together with bitumen, forming a stable base course in tarmac surfacing schemes. It sits between the lower sub-base materials and the top wearing course, absorbing structural loads and distributing them across the pavement construction. In typical UK road build-ups, DBM is laid 100-150 mm thick depending on traffic intensity and design requirements.
