What is kiln-dried sand?

Kiln-dried sand is sand that has been heated in an industrial kiln to remove virtually all moisture content. It is brushed into the gaps between block paving stones as a final step after laying, where it locks the blocks together and fills the joints.

The key difference from regular builders' sand or pit sand is the absence of water. Standard sand retains moisture and can compact unevenly, allowing blocks to shift or settle differently over time. Kiln-dried sand remains stable and uniform once in place, creating a firm bond between adjacent blocks without the risk of dampness or settlement issues that wet sand introduces.
