Slip resistance rating systems (R-value and PTV) measure how much friction a paving surface provides to prevent slipping, using standardised tests on wet or dry surfaces.
Two standardised methods measure how much grip a paving surface delivers: the R-value system and the pendulum test value (PTV). The R-value scale runs from R9 (low grip) up to R13 (maximum slip resistance), and applies mainly to ceramic tiles and some interior finishes. The PTV system uses a calibrated pendulum device to test friction on wet surfaces, producing scores typically between 25 and 90, with higher numbers indicating greater slip resistance.
